Blessed ChaosDB, Who Opened Other People's Databases

Patron of Cosmos DB databases, primary keys fetched from afar, and notebooks left running.

Life

On 26 August 2021 researchers at Wiz revealed ChaosDB, a flaw in Cosmos DB, Azure's managed database. Through the Jupyter Notebook feature, enabled by default, one could retrieve the primary access keys of other customers, and with them read and write their data. Microsoft disabled the feature and warned thousands of customers to regenerate their keys.

Prayer

O Blessed ChaosDB, who reaches the neighbour's database from a notebook, let our primary keys never leave the tenant's fence. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by regenerating Cosmos DB keys and disabling the features nobody remembered enabling.

A lost primary key, everyone's database.
