Saint CredManifest, Who Published the Private Keys
Patron of Azure AD applications, certificates uploaded carelessly, and private keys that should never have left.
Life
On 17 November 2021 NetSPI described CredManifest: when a certificate was uploaded to an Azure Active Directory application or service principal, in certain cases the private key too ended up recorded among the object's readable attributes. Anyone in the tenant with read access to applications could thus retrieve it and impersonate the identity. Microsoft fixed it by preventing disclosure of private keys added to applications (CVE-2021-42306).
Prayer
O Saint CredManifest, who exposes the private key along with the certificate, let our secrets stay on the right side of the wall. Amen.
How to celebrate
Celebrated by rotating the suspect certificates and checking that no private key is readable in the applications' attributes.
Upload the key with the certificate and you gift it to the whole tenant.
