Saint Amnesia, Who Forgot the Ads Nobody Saw

Patron of online ad auctions, impressions nobody really saw, and inflated budgets.

Life

In 2015 Pixalate researchers described the Amnesia Bug in the implementation of the OpenRTB advertising protocol: by not limiting the time between a bid response and the impression notification, advertisers could be billed for ads that were never actually shown. The flaw was linked to the Xindi botnet, able to simulate enormous numbers of phantom views and siphon large sums from the ad market.

Prayer

O Saint Amnesia, who bills for impressions nobody remembers, let our ads be paid for only when someone has seen them. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by enforcing time limits between bid and notification and verifying impressions with independent measurement.

Pay for what nobody saw and you pay twice.

CVE
CVE-2015-7266

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) OpenRTB 2.3 protocol implementation might allow remote attackers to conceal the status of ad transactions and potentially compromise bid integrity by leveraging failure to limit the time between bid responses and impression notifications, aka the Amnesia Bug.
