Blessed M1RACLES, Covert Channel in the Silicon

Patron of Apple M1 chips, registers two processes should not share, and vulnerabilities scarier in the press release than in fact.

Life

On 25 May 2021 Hector Martin described M1RACLES (CVE-2021-30747): the Apple M1 chip had a system register any two processes could read and write, creating a covert channel between them. It let no one steal data or take control: it only let two already-running programs talk on the sly. The discoverer himself downplayed its severity with self-irony, which is why he remains blessed.

Prayer

O Blessed M1RACLES, a channel that steals nothing but gossips in secret, let our processes speak only when they must. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by reading security advisories in full, past the name and the logo.

Not everything with a logo is a catastrophe.
