Blessed Hole196, the Hole at the Foot of Page 196

Patron of WPA2 Wi-Fi networks, group keys, and employees who already know the password.

Life

In July 2010 Md Sohail Ahmad of AirTight Networks presented Hole196, so named because the flaw hid at the foot of page 196 of the 802.11 standard. The group key, shared by all clients for broadcast traffic, could be used in reverse by an authorised user to send forged packets and deceive the other clients. No encryption was broken: you only had to be inside the network already.

Prayer

O Blessed Hole196, who opens a breach among those who already know the password, teach our networks not to trust their own guests. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by isolating clients from one another on the wireless network and treating every inside user as a possible curious neighbour.

Who knows everyone's key deceives everyone.
