Saint Energizer DUO, of the Charger With a Back Door

Patron of USB chargers, drivers that do too much, and ports that open by surprise.

Life

On 9 March 2010 CVE-2010-0103 was catalogued: the software for the Energizer DUO USB charger secretly installed a library that stayed listening on TCP port 7777. From there, anyone on the network could download and run programs on the victim's Windows PC. A charger that, along with the batteries, also topped up the attackers.

Prayer

O Saint Energizer DUO, who brings a back door along with the charge, let our accessories not open what they shouldn't. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by uninstalling the charger software, deleting the Arucer.dll library, and closing port 7777.

CVE-2010-0103

UsbCharger.dll in the Energizer DUO USB battery charger software contains a backdoor that is implemented through the Arucer.dll file in the %WINDIR%\system32 directory, which allows remote attackers to download arbitrary programs onto a Windows PC, and execute these programs, via a request to TCP port 7777.
