Blessed Bitskrieg, Who Bypassed BitLocker From Recovery

Patron of BitLocker-encrypted disks, unencrypted recovery partitions, and TPMs that trust too soon.

Life

In late May 2026 "Nightmare Eclipse" announced Bitskrieg, a BitLocker bypass found by Jonas Lykkegård and derived from the earlier YellowKey technique; the details followed in early June. The attack goes through the Windows Recovery Environment, which lives on an unencrypted partition: by forcing the machine into recovery mode and manoeuvring the boot configuration, physical access could reach the encrypted volume while the TPM stayed unlocked. According to the authors the underlying problem remains even after the YellowKey fix.

Prayer

O Blessed Bitskrieg, who enters through the recovery door left open, let our TPMs lock before they hand over the key. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by protecting the recovery environment, adding a boot PIN, and physically guarding encrypted machines.

Open recovery partition, encryption left ajar.
