Saint RAMpage, Who Hammered Android's Memory

Patron of Android smartphones, crowded RAM, and bits that will not stay put.

Life

In 2018 a team of researchers presented RAMpage (CVE-2018-9442), applying Rowhammer to the memory of Android smartphones. Repeatedly hammering certain rows of RAM caused bit flips in neighbouring rows, enough to break the isolation between apps and the system and reach control of the device. The flaw was not in the code but in the silicon itself, where capacitors packed too close influence one another.

Prayer

O Saint RAMpage, who bends silicon by dint of blows, protect our phones' memory from the hammers of its neighbours. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by installing Android updates and handling with care the memory that is, underneath, made of physics.

Hammer one row, and the neighbour pays.
