Blessed SgxPectre, the Ghost in the Vault

Patron of SGX enclaves, secrets kept in safes, and ghosts that walk through walls.

Life

In 2018 a team of researchers from Ohio State University showed that Spectre did not stop at Intel SGX enclaves, the processor's strongrooms designed to resist even the operating system. By poisoning the branch predictor from outside, they could make the enclave run speculative code that left traces in the cache, and so read its secrets, including the keys of enclaves supplied by Intel itself.

Prayer

O Blessed SgxPectre, who enters the vault without opening the door, teach our predictors not to trust strangers. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by updating the SGX microcode and SDK, and leaving a candle lit for the ghosts still to come.

Lock the vault as tight as you please, the ghost walks through with ease.
