Blessed BrokenPrint, Who Printed Trouble

Patron of home routers, shared USB printers, and services nobody knows are running.

Life

On 28 February 2022 NCC Group's Exploit Development Group, with Alex Plaskett, described a stack overflow in the KC_PRINT service of the Netgear R6700v3 router. The service shares a USB printer through the ReadySHARE feature, and from the local network, without authentication, it allowed code to run on the router. Netgear fixed it in a firmware update.

Prayer

O Blessed BrokenPrint, who prints code instead of pages, let our routers switch off the services we don't use. Amen.

How to celebrate

Celebrated by updating the router firmware and unplugging the printer nobody has used since 2015.

Share a printer, and you share the trouble.
