"Vacca Sordida Scribit". A race condition in the Linux kernel's copy-on-write, present since 2007, let any local user write to read-only files and become root. Phil Oester found it while analysing a real attack, and for years it also served to root Android phones. Lesson: concurrency bugs hide for a long time, and "local only" on a shared server means "nearly remote".
