On 8 February 2022 the Department of Justice announced the arrest in New York of Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan and the seizure of about 94,000 bitcoin, then worth about $3.6 billion, stolen in the 2016 hack of the Bitfinex exchange. IRS-CI agents had followed the funds on the blockchain for years, through thousands of transactions, to an encrypted cloud file holding the wallet keys, and decrypted it. At the time it was the largest financial seizure in the department's history.
