On 4 May 2000 a love letter nobody had asked for left the Philippines: LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs, a VBScript worm that mailed itself to every Outlook address book it found. Whoever opened it, thinking it plain text, saw their files overwritten, and within days the victims numbered tens of millions of Windows PCs. Its author was never prosecuted: the Philippines had no cybercrime law at the time, and hurried to pass one soon after.

Exorcism

Cast it out by distrusting unexpected attachments and always showing file extensions, because .TXT.vbs is not text. Block script attachments such as .vbs and .js at the mail gateway, and disable Windows Script Host wherever it is not needed.
